New York City Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk

October 31, 2023

Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of gorgeous blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Rosenberg Wellness Center presents nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is talked up around the world of nutrition for its multiple health benefits as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are good for all of us in our New York City chiropractic family!

BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET

With the growing recognition that diet plays a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being created. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other papers, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another new paper explains that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just published this past month showed that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet closely had lower chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower osteoporosis odds, decreased probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to check out and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Rosenberg Wellness Center finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our New York City chiropractic patients and their families.

WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
